Allen Laing

Wood solves problems. I create ceremonial artefacts for everyday life.

As a wood sculptor I employ play, fantasy, and performance in the creation of magical

contraptions that fulfil my wishes and desires.

I am inspired by ritual objects from preindustrial societies that are meant to be used in everyday

life; not “artworks” in the Western sense, destined to be locked up behind glass or placed in drawers in a museum. What I create is imbued with blood, sweat, and grime alongside hopes and dreams accumulated from being touched and cherished over time.

During WARP Wood I have been exploring the different kinds of woods to be found here

in the Northern Hemisphere and I’ve excitedly gathered up many different species. All of the

wood that I’ve used in the US has been salvaged or picked up from rivers and roads. I have

collaborated with the wood, allowing existing shapes to guide what I make. I have also

collaborated with members of the public, using their stories to create a “book” in wood.

I was born in, and live in, South Africa, where I completed my Master's of Fine Art. I have

attended residencies in Paris, New York, and now Philadelphia. My works are housed

in museum collections around South Africa.
