Artist Statement

This piece came about after radiation treatments for a brain tumor. On the last day of treatments, you are invited to ring a bell to celebrate your newfound health. I felt that there needed to be a more extravagant gesture, and imagined marching up and down the hallway, blowing a horn, annoying everyone. In addition to celebrating a new beginning, this piece also represents an awakening, a call not to waste time, to celebrate with the knowledge that time is limited. For me, music has been a lifetime companion, and the cart through which the horn is entwined is made of old piano keys that my dad, who rebuilt instruments, left to me after his death. They are cobbled together casually, but as needed to support the horn, which is carved with swirls that are intended to evoke breath.

Phil was someone who made good use of his time—he made things, he celebrated, and made others feel welcome and appreciated, so this piece is intended to commemorate him, as well. The embellished bell of the horn was one of his turnings.
