Lincoln Seitzman was best known for a complex laminating technique that he utilized to create a series, by 1987, called “Basket Illusion.” Lincoln taught himself wood turning in his sixties, after an engineering career in his family’s textile business. His series of turned and constructed vessels was inspired by Southwest Native American basketry which Lincoln discovered on trips around the American west. He glued together small, colorful pieces of wood in stunning patterns and referred to his technique as polychromatic turning.

From the Artist:

“The primary challenge here was to extend the basket illusion concept from just a turned segmented assembly to a segmented form, in which turned and otherwise fashioned parts, both real and illusory, are merged in an aesthetically compatible context. The secondary challenge was methodological, namely to find a practical way to accurately assemble over 5,000 pieces. The problem was solved with the use of the heretofore untried polychromatically-assembled-stave construction.”
