By reflecting his firsthand experience of the changing currents in twentieth-century craft, these images form a uniquely personal record that captures an important aspect of the history of the studio craft movement. He was an innovator in woodworking tools and techniques, and a pioneer in using power tools to boost production. After training to be a sculptor at the Art Students League of New York, he developed and produced a distinctive line of "functional sculpture" - wooden bowls, trays, and serving ware - that captured the essence of Midcentury Modern Design. He stood with now legendary artists and designers like Wharton Esherick, Sam Maloof, Wendell Castle, Charles Eames, George Nakashima, and Bob Stocksdale (among others) in the most important exhibitions of fine craft in America. His wares were tailored for and sold in high-end retailers such as Hammacher Schlemmer, Saks Fifth Avenue, and the original Pottery Barn store in Manhattan. After moving to rural Pennsylvania in 1961, he re-emerged as a teacher, mentor, and role model for dozens of successful artists and woodworkers who found inspiration in his teaching, his methods, and his self-sufficient lifestyle close to nature. After fading into obscurity following his death, this book rekindles awareness and appreciation of this remarkable American artist.

<meta Like its predecessor River of Destiny, Life and Work of Binh Pho, Shadow of the Turning focuses on art, philosophy and storytelling, yet is an entirely fictional story, blending the mythic worlds of fairy tale, fantasy, romance and adventure. The story is illustrated using an exciting new body of work by Binh Pho, which combines woodturning, sculpture, painting and art glass. The story line explores the collaboration of a diverse group of international artists brought together to collaborate with Binh on works of art that celebrate traditional craft and processes that redefine the boundaries of contemporary art.

--

Authors: Bin Pho & Kevin Wallace

Item Weight : 2.9 pounds

Perfect Paperback : 263 pages

ISBN-10 : 0988578700

ISBN-13 : 978-0988578708

Publisher : Fine Arts Press; 1st Edition (December 16, 2012)

Language: : English

Connections: International Turning Exchange 1995-2005 is a retrospective compilation covering 10 years of an international residency program operated by the Wood Turning Center in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. The power and politics in women's lives are brought into focus through Abid's global lens as an artist working between the United States and Pakistan. By focusing on taboos and stereotypes that are rarely addressed in public, Abid aims to normalize them through dialogue and discussion. By exposing what lies beneath veils of secrecy, viewers can find resonance with their own lives. As the shame dissipates, the healing can begin. Taboo collects the recent work of Pakistani artist Humaira Abid, produced by a partnership between ArtXchange Gallery (Seattle, WA), Bellevue Arts Museum (Bellevue, WA), Twelve Gates Arts (Philadelphia, PA), and Khaas Gallery (Islamabad, Pakistan).

--

Author: Jennifer-Navva Milliken

Publisher : ArtXchange Gallery (January 1, 2018)

ISBN-10 : 069206723X

ISBN-13 : 978-0692067239

Item Weight : 1 pounds

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0411/4487/7221/products/1058b90f-d5c0-47e3-82a6-42ea1389212b.jpg?v=1614460717
standard-membership
Standard Membership

Plant the seed & grow with us.

The Center for Art in Wood is able to provide an impressive array of programs and services thanks to support from our patrons. His objective is to emphasize the natural beauty and the imperfections of whole pieces of wood. Mother Nature produces an infinite variety of interesting shapes, colors and contortions, and Philip’s goal is to work with the natural flow to create pleasing pieces of turned wood. He is committed to creating traditionally shaped pieces for everyday use as well as for decoration.

He likes to turn local woods including cherry, maple, black walnut, black locust, hickory, as well as some other less known species. In addition, some of his pieces use more exotic imports such as coolibah, red gum, eucalyptus and ebony to name a few. In the last few years he has discovered mesquite, a desert tree with excellent stability, colors and wood grain.

To see more by Philip Hauser click HERE
