Artist Statement
I got to know Phil Brown primarily through the ITE (International Turning Exchange) residency program. For a few years running, we’d meet up at various ITE events, critique the work at the allTURNatives exhibition openings, and catch up over dinner afterwards. Phil was warm. He was genuine. He was very supportive. I had the utmost respect for him.
Phil’s graceful bowl forms are marvelous metaphors for sound, for crescendo and decrescendo, so it seemed natural to me to adapt his work to a musical instrument as a way to celebrate his life.
This simple system flute is in the key of D. It has a tapered bore and a tuning slide. I tried a variety of woods before deciding that birchwood offered the most elegant complement to the twice-turned cottonwood of Phil’s bowl.
The name Legato refers to a term used in music to indicate a smooth and flowing connection of notes and phrases.
